A song arose during the 60’s. I believe it is very prophetic for today.
There’s something happening here
What it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it’s time we stop, children, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
There’s battle lines being drawn
Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it’s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It’s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you’re always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
Stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
Stop, now, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
Stop, children, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
For What It’s Worth, Stephen Stills, Buffalo Springfield, 1966
Sound familiar? Nostalgic, isn’t it? Especially the part about paranoia strikes deep. We have to stop and look around at how we are looking at circumstances instead of truth. Psalm 68 vs 20 (Passion Translation) says, “Our God is a mighty God who saves us over and over!”. It goes on to say in vs 22,..”You’d better come out of your hiding places, all of you who are doing your best to stay far away from me.”
I’ve learned I can’t hide. I have to stop and look around at what’s really going on. When I’m afraid, angry, or excited I need to read the signs in my body. What is it saying. Am I holding my breath or in flight from a childhood trauma? I have to search out the truth and what I need to do about it. Meditating on scripture, journaling, stretching to music I love, and being in nature are things that really help me.
I join with Martin Luther King in one of his famous quotes, “I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream.” And that dream is that we can all join hands and work this out together. We have to stop hurting one another for our future’s sake.
Please leave a comment of what came to mind as you read this. What is your dream?
Awesome message. Couldn’t have come out at a better time.
There are so many voices in our heads these days and it is time for us to stop ard hear what’s going down. There is a still small voice on the inside of us that we need to hear. That voice will guide and direct us to our called place, our refuge from all the confusion in this world. Great word and very timely!!
